2001: A Space Odyssey

Arthur Clarke often writes excellent SF, and I think that 2001 is probably his best book. Still, don't expect anything remotely character-driven. Also, fans of the movie may be turned off by Clarke's trademark "I will now explain everything" mode of writing, although people who were confused by the movie might enjoy it.
