Although I grew up reading Ellison stories, it's this book that made him one of my favorite writers. I picked it up again because reading The Brothers Karamazov reminded me of Prince Myshkin, and Hold the Relish, a hilarious story that I appreciate more now that I've spent enough time in LA to eat a number of hotdogs at Pink's. The rest of the book is not funny; the stories are about death and dying, and were written in response to a large number of deaths among Ellison's friends. |
