The Art and Science of Dumpster Diving

[cover]

by John Hoffman

isbn: 1893626075
subject: Nonfiction
finished: Summer 1997

I wouldn't have thought that a book could make digging through people's trash sound like an attractive (and even noble) pursuit, but that's what The Art and Science of Dumpster Diving does. It's engaging and funny, although Hoffman has a pretty bizarre take on life. Anybody that works with even slightly sensitive information should read the "information diving" chapter; you probably don't realize what you're throwing away. While I was reading this, a new Wired came out (September '97) that has a pretty good article on diving dumpsters belonging to high tech firms.
