Certainly there is a no lack of material to parody in Professor Tolkien's work: the dialogue is stylized, the characters wooden, the songs cheezy, and the descriptions overlong. Bored of the Rings takes advantage of these opportunities and more: it's a hilarious spoof about Frito and Spam and the awful ring foisted off on them by an incompetent and cowardly wizard. Some of the humor hasn't aged well -- there are a lot of references to products that haven't been manufactured for decades -- but overall this is a fun short novel. Recommended to all but JRR's faithful. |
