Candide is Voltaire's reaction to optimism; it relates the story of the innocent Candide, abroad in a senseless and brutal world. Unfortunately my edition contains few footnotes and I think I missed a lot of jokes because I don't know much about 18th century France -- this would be a good book to have read in a literature class. Even so, Candide is well written, bitingly funny, and enjoyable. |
