This is Frank Miller's over-the-top reinterpretation of the Batman story. As well as great art, insane violence, and hilarious satire, it has a good plot: after a decade of forced retirement, Batman is back on the streets until his methods attract government attention and Superman is ordered to bring him in. The Dark Knight Returns is well worth reading on its own, but it should be considered mandatory reading for people interested in comics because it has been a major influence on the medium since it came out in 1986.
