by Gene Wolfe
This is a short novel about Mark, a weaver's apprentice in medieval Europe who has to grow up quickly when a villain causes trouble for his village. The story is somewhat subtle; as I now expect for a Wolfe book, things are not always what they first appear to be. I enjoyed The Devil in a Forest, although it's not a major work compared to The Fifth Head of Cerberus or The Book of the New Sun.
