Dune is good SF that has aged well because it focuses on people and political intrigue. The characteristics of the planet Dune are important to the plot, but specifics of technology are not. The characters take themselves a little too seriously to be believable -- although I've unfortunately lost my copy, I remember that this was one of the main things that the hilarious parody Doon made fun of.
