This is the story of an English child in Shanghai during WW2; Jim is separated from his parents following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He grows up in a prison camp, and adapts to the war -- by the end of the book it is all he knows. Ballard captures a child's viewpoint beautifully, and the war's events are even more disturbing seen through his eyes. The prose is surreal and well written; highly recommended.
