I've been interested in distributed objects for a while, and finally got around to reading this. Unfortunately, at two years old it's becoming obsolete since this is a fast moving area and the book describes lots of specific technologies. On the other hand, it's nice that time has exposed some of the authors' more grandiose predictions about distributed objects taking over the world. Anyway, once I got past the cute but annoying martian motif, I found The Essential Distributed Objects Survival Guide to be a reasonably well-written book that gives a good high-level overview of this complicated topic.
