I didn't read this cover-to-cover, but rather referred to it many times while developing a device driver. It is slightly out of date (as of October '97), but almost all of the information is still useful. Linux is under-documented, and I found it essential to have someplace besides to sources to look for information about how things like the virtual memory and networking subsystems work. Highly recommended, but only to people that are interested in grubby kernel implementation details. Update (Spring '98): a revised version of this book has been released; even so, I recommend that driver writers get Linux Device Drivers instead. |
