Mage is a modern rendition of the Arthur story, told as a comic book. I consider this to be one of the best comics ever produced. What's so good about it? Well, Wagner is an excellent storyteller and artist (after the first few issues, at least) and he creates an interesting world that contains some pretty bizarre characters; it is funny at times, but basically serious. I found it easy to identify with Kevin Matchstick, the reluctant, semi-autobiographical hero of the series. The characters are well developed, and the villains are enjoyably nasty. I hope the collected edition, which is sort of hard to find, will come back into print now that Mage II is finally coming out. |
