This is a fun collection that probably represents some of Niven's best short work. A Relic of the Empire, The Soft Weapon, and The Handicapped deal with the legacy that the billion-year-old Slaver Empire left for humanity. The title story is well done although its plot hinges on a somewhat ridiculous premise -- that an entire spacefaring society would miss a basic consequence of the laws of physics.
