Peace

[cover]

by Gene Wolfe

isbn: 0312890338
subject: Fiction and Literature
finished: 10/15/2000

Peace is a fragmented story about Alden Dennis Weer, a nondescript engineer who lives and dies in a small midwestern town. It's also about the industrialization of the rural midwest and about stories -- ghost stories, in particular. In fact, the whole book is a story told by a ghost. A number of murders are implied, probably at least one of them committed by Weer. It's hard to say much about Peace after reading it only once, except that it's classic Wolfe: a fascinating textual puzzle in which each clue is given only once (if at all).
