The Pearl is a short, powerful book about a couple who, in a time of need, find an enormous pearl. Unfortunately, the pearl is merely what they think they want, instead of what they really want -- they find this out slowly and painfully as their lives are poisoned by greed evoked by the wealth that the pearl represents. Steinbeck is a wonderful writer, and I recommend this book.
