This book is full of advice about how to survive in industrial or academic research; it covers topics such as finding an adviser, giving a talk, choosing between career options, and building a research program. It's well written and concise, and while I don't have the experience to know how good the advice is, it certainly seems to be sensible, and to reflect the realities of the research world. Highly recommended.
