I remember when the first issue of Sandman came out, when I was in high school -- I wasn't particularly impressed, but for some reason I kept reading. By the end of the eight issues collected in this volume, it was one of my favorite comics. Rereading these issues, I can see why, although the later stories were often better than the one collected here. In any case, Sandman is one of the ten or so best graphic novels ever written, and it's definitely worth reading.
