The final volume of The Lord of the Rings wraps up all of the threads begun in previous books. Finally, the ring is destroyed, the king returns to his throne, and the hobbits get to go home. In general, there is not much reason to read fantasy written after TLoTR, since so much of it is based on this work. Tolkien is the real thing -- highly recommended.
