Set in near-future Los Angeles, A Scanner Darkly is a paranoid tale about an undercover cop/drug addict who is ordered to stake out his own house. It is very funny in places, but the overall tone is serious, and Dick does a good job conveying the helplessness that Arctor feels as his world collapses around him.
