In this book, the Black Company has almost completed its journey to Khatovar, which in the past few books has been obstructed by an absurd number of armies. This is the eighth Black Company book, and the fourth in the second set of books. It is better than any of the previous Books of the South although not nearly as good as any of the first series. Cook has unfortunately given up on telling the story entirely from the first person point of view, using a somewhat strained plot device. I started reading the Black Company books about ten years ago, and like them a lot; the series as a whole is well-written, solidly plotted, reasonably original escapist fantasy with an enjoyably dark tone. |
