The Silver Spike represents something of a fork in the road for the Black Company series: it follows some relatively minor characters who gets themselves and lots of others into hot water by stealing an artifact that contains the essence of evil. Like Shadows Linger this book contains a lot of grungy psychological drama, and overall it works well; this is a rewarding read.
