Soldiers Live

[cover]

book 10 of The Black Company

by Glen Cook

isbn: 0812566556
subject: Nonfiction, General Science
finished: 7/22/2002

Like its predecessors, this book is far too long. Unlike them, however, it contains some genuinely interesting character development, particularly of Tobo and Lady. What happens in this book is that Cook finally finishes writing himself out of the narrative swamp that has caused the previous 1500 pages of BC material to move at a glacial pace. With the setup finally taken care of, he starts killing off principal characters in a wholesale way in order to leave an appropriately hassle-free future for the few remaining characters. Sometimes this approach works, sometimes it doesn't -- the final defeat of Kina being an example of the latter. In any case, the series is finally, mercifully, over.
