Tales of the City is a collection of short, often humorous episodes depicting life in 1970's San Francisco. Although it follows a number of characters, the main one is probably Mary Ann, a recent transplant from Cleveland who's having trouble adjusting to the fast lifestyle that her peers seem to be enjoying. Maupin takes an affectionate view of most of his characters, and the result is a fun, readable book.
