This is my kind of book -- it's about philosophy and relationships, about how concepts come to mean different things to each of us, and about the difficulty of really connecting with another human being. And it's about all this without being sappy or manipulative. Set (mostly) under the shadow of the communist government in Czechoslovakia, The Unbearable Lightness of Being is about Tomas and his wife Tereza, one of his mistresses, and a lover of hers. Tereza is attached to Tomas by her insecurity; Tomas truly loves her but sees nothing wrong with having other women. This book is beautifully written, and I highly recommend it.
